Notes: Museum of Northern Arizona Bulletin No. 46. The initial survey of the proposed power line from the Pinnacle Peak power plant near Phoenix diagonally across Arizona to the Four Corners power plant near Farmington, New Mexico was done by helicopter. The helicopter survey was so successful at avoiding prehistoric sites that Arizona Public Service Company asked Olson to select a site to excavate (think public relations). Olson selected the Cross Canyon group of sites–seven sites spanning approximately 500 years–east of the Hopi reservation. Why the volume isn’t called something like “The Cross Canyon Excavations” shall forever remain a mystery.
