Notes: Includes essays by Patricia Nelson Limerick and Charles Wilkinson.  The “New West” as described in 1997, from the Sierra Nevadas north through the Cascades, to the Front Range of the Rockies, from the Mexican border to the Canadian border.  “The American West, we argue, is the archetypal case of an American region yanked from its historical and myth-based sense of place into hyperdevelopment and plugged-in modernity.”  (From the Preface)  I’m sure lots has changed since this was first published–the population of Phoenix is now 1.63 million, and the population of greater Las Vegas, Nevada is now 2.84 million–but it remains an excellent reference, one of my favorites.
