Notes: The computer program Art 1 was designed by Dr. Richard Williams (1931-2018), an electrical engineering professor at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Williams and his family were also our next door neighbors for almost 30 years. Art 1 was the first computer program designed specifically for artists, but inevitably it made its way into the scientific community. Its creation led to advances in digitizing images (see photographs), facial recognition, and the early beginnings of computer art work. One of the early users of the program was Donald K. Robbins (known to our family as Don Robbins), a coworker of my father at Sandia National Laboratory. The image “Verifying Star” (see photographs) was created by Dr. Robbins.
