Notes:  If you’re looking for a GREAT adventure story, this is it.  The winter of 1983 sent an enormous amount of rain water and snow melt toward Lake Powell and the Glen  Canyon dam. The Bureau of Reclamation decided to release huge amounts of that water to relieve pressure on the dam (almost destroying the dam in the process).  And that torrential release of water led Kenton Grua, the hero of this story, and his two companions to attempt the fastest boat trip through the 277 miles of the Grand Canyon.   The Durango Telegraph, in its review of the book, said “It would not be overblown to say The Emerald Mile deserves a spot on the bookshelf alongside such enduring classics as Cadillac Desert, Desert Solitaire, and Encounters with the Archdruid.  It’s that good.”  I couldn’t agree more.
