Whittlesey defined the major FORMS of agriculture–crop and livestock association, the methods used to grow the crops and produce the stock, the intensity of application to the land of labor, capital, organization, and output, disposal of the products for consumption, and “the ensemble of structures used to house and facilitate the farming operations) (p. 209)–and then identified the major TYPES of agriculture–nomadic herding, livestock ranching, shifting cultivation (e.g. in the rain forests and their borders), rudimentary sedentary tillage, intensive subsistence tillage with rice dominant, intensive subsistence tillage without paddy rice, commercial plantation crop tillage, Mediterranean agriculture, commercial grain farming, commercial livestock and crop farming, commercial dairy farming, specialized horticulture, and commercial agriculture. All this is now known as the “Whittlesey System”. VERY RARE. NO copies available for sale, and held in only eight libraries worldwide.
