Notes: Cover and title page list the editor Gardner as Linton J. Gardner, while Table of Contents and Prologue list him as J. Linton or J.L. Gardner.  Conference papers.  Second in  a series of conference papers on the ecology arid and semiarid lands. “Logically, of course, discussions of various phases of human ecology, of agriculture, and of the relation of natural vegetation to stream flow in arid and semiarid areas should be included; but these have been reserved for later, special symposia in the series, and the present papers deal with the ecology of plants and o f animals lower than man.  And, since the vegetation and the soils cannot be separated without doing violence to both, a paper on the soils of the region is included.”  (From the Prologue)  Approximately one-third of the land surface of the Earth is located in arid and semiarid areas.  Those areas will be put to increased use as the population of the planet increases.  This seminar, from more than 50 years ago, advocates for “sound ecological principles” in the development of those areas.  Yeah, fat chance.
