Notes: Ricketts’ (et al) “Between Pacific Tides” is considered a classic of marine biology and ecology and was first published in 1939. He was the model for many characters in the novels of John Steinbeck (Doc in Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday, Friend Ed in Burning Bright, and others). He was co-author, with Steinbeck, of Log from the Sea of Cortez. He has at least 17 marine species named for him. For a biography of Ricketts see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Ricketts. Calvin was a freelance writer who met Ricketts in the late 1920s. Calvin and Ricketts began “a little pocket guide” to explain the sea creatures along the California coast, which became “Between Pacific Tides.” Hedgepeth, also a marine biologist, edited several editions of “Between Pacific Tides”.
