Notes: Everett’s revised doctoral dissertation.  The “Western” Cherokees settled in Texas in 1819, after a disagreement with their “Eastern” branch over maintaining traditional lifeways.  The Mexican government viewed these Cherokees as a buffer against Anglo settlement in Texas.  By 1840, the Cherokee were no longer welcome in Texas, and were forced north into Indian Territory, to be reunited with the other branches of the tribe.
