Council Grove, Kansas was the first “rest stop” on the Santa Fe Trail heading west, primarily due to its location on the Neosho River, and the last “rest stop” prior to heading over the plains. It was named after an agreement between American settlers and the Osage Nation in 1825, allowing settlers’ wagon trains to pass westward through the area on the Santa Fe Trail. The author, Lalla Brigham, was considered Council Grove’s unofficial historian during her lifetime.
