Notes: Pamphlet/Booklet. Geiger was the author of 12 books, 16 pamphlets, and 85 articles, dealing with the role of the Franciscans during the colonial eras of California, Arizona, Florida, Mexico, and the southwest. He was noted for his scholarship, but later scholars have found fault for his downplaying of the role of the missionaries in Indian slavery and native population decimation (disease, forced labor). This 56-page booklet is a a history of the Spanish entrada into Arizona, mini-biographies of some of the early pioneering Friars, and brief histories of the establishment of various missions (Apache, Papago, Navajo). There is a 2 page centerfold map of parishes, missions, chapels, schools, and “Places Formerly Served by Franciscans.” Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Ephemera is a “Compliments of Rev. Maynard Geiger” card. From the library of the late archaeologist John Otis Brew, his signature on cover. For a biography and bibliography of Rev. Geiger see https://escholarship.org/uc/item/66d004nh
