Notes: The “modern” Indian arts and crafts movement got its start in the FDR administration, under the leadership of John Collier, the commissioner of Indian Affairs, and Rene d’Harnoncourt, general manager of the IACB. It was the San Francisco Exposition of 1940 that “…served as a nationwide advertising medium for Indian arts and crafts and contributed to the creation of a better understanding of and a wider market for Indian products…The Indian exhibit served as a powerful stimulus for Indian arts and crafts production and presented a testing ground for the commercial value of various products from different parts of the country.” (Pages 197-198) And here we are today, well beyond the trading posts, with a vigorous Indian arts and crafts movement.
