Notes: What started as an analysis of the collection of Navajo and southwestern textiles proved too large a project, so the project was divided into two–Pueblo textiles (see https://joethebookguy.com/shop/indian/pueblo-indian-textiles-a-living-tradition/ ), and this volume. “Most of the textiles illustrated in this book are from the collection of the School of American Research. Some originally were illustrated in the series of pamphlets on Navajo textiles written in the 1930s by the late Harry P. Mera (republished in book form in 1947), and are probably still thought of by many readers as type specimens. The pieces illustrated in color were carefully selected to show the full range of shades found in Navajo textiles: presynthetic red (cochineal and lac), bright anilines, vegetal indigo, natural plant dyes, and so forth.” (From the Preface) More a history of Navajo rugs and their evolution than an exhibit catalog.
