Condition: Fair.  Paper tape binding worn, torn, taped.  Ex-library.  At least 4 previous owners.  No folds.  First previous owner’s stamp on upper front cover corner.  Spine head bumped (dropped?).  Lower front cover corner at spine foot has the remnant of a library tag, taped to the paper tape binding.  Second previous owner’s library stamp on upper corner title page, near spine head.  Library due date slip and check-out pocket glued to first rear end-paper.   Author’s name and library category in pencil on upper front cover edge.  Third previous owner’s stamp on mid-front cover, upper rear cover, mid-title page, and lower edge inside rear cover.  Gift inscription in ink from author to first previous owner on upper corner title page.  Quite a bit of transparent tape on binding, front and rear, spine and foot.  Lower rear cover corner has an approx. 2″ bend.  Some smudges to front and rear covers. Edge and corner wear.  If it was a horse I’d say it’s been rode hard and put up wet.

Notes: First Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnic Research (DoA, U. of AZ).  First previous owner was Clyde Kluckhohn, his stamp on upper front cover corner.  Gift inscription from author to Kluckhohn and his wife, Florence.  Basically statistical information about “all” the Indian tribes in Arizona (in 1952, when the research was conducted)–government, resources, income, education, health, relationships with the BIA, land and water rights, tribal enterprises and budgets, village organization.  If it could be measured or counted, the “Bureau of Ethnic Research” tried.  In 1983 the Bureau was renamed as the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA).  Its role had expanded and “Ethnic” just wasn’t cool anymore.
