Notes: Nasatir was a student of Bolton’s at the University of California, Berkeley, and received his Ph.D. at the age of 19 (C’mon all you slackers out there). The “borderland” in question here is the Spanish borderland, “…from the Mississippi to the Missouri River, to the hinterland; from New Orleans, St. Louis, and Prairie du Chien–the extreme northern perimeter of Spanish influence–to the interior and to Santa Fe. In the south it shifted from New Orleans and Natchitoches to Texas and New Mexico. It winds up centering around Santa Fe and extending up the Rocky Mountain ledge, thus rivaling both British and American interests.” (From the Preface). Far from being a stuffy and stilted “academic” history, Nasatir can really tell a story.
