Notes: Madariaga was a novelist, poet, historian, essayist, and diplomat. He was nominated for both the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Nobel Peace Prize (though in different years, and never won). And, according to Madariaga, Cortes didn’t “burn” his ships, but had them bored and grounded.
