Condition: 2 copies. Copy 1 (CB): Poor. The glued binding has failed. Front and rear covers loose (now taped). Chipping, tears, edge wear. Several pages chipping. Previous owner’s stamp on cover. Ex-library? Tag at upper spine has typical library markings (Engerrand’s?). Perhaps deaccesioned and Engerrand acquired. No way of knowing. At best, a reading copy. The damned thing is more than a hundred years old. I’m surprised it’s here at all. Copy 2 (BRU): Poor. Glue binding has failed. Front cover has approx. 3″ x 1/2″ triangular chip at recto edge. Spine head has approx. 1/4″ x 1/4″ chip. Spine foot has approx. 3/4″ tear and chip, exposing signatures. Chipping, wear to all edges. No internal marks.
Notes: Pamphlet. Anthropological Papers of the American Museum of Natural History, Vol. XVIII, Part 1. Rare. Copy 1 from the library of George Engerrand, his stamp on cover. Engerrand (1877-1961) was the successor to Franz Boas as director the Escuela Internacional de Arqueología e Historia. Kroeber was the first person to receive a PhD. in Anthropology from Columbia University in 1901, studying under Boas. Kroeber was also the father of Ursula Kroeber, later better known as Ursula K. LeGuin, the science fiction writer.
