Pictorial front board and endpapers. Pages II and III are advertisements for businesses associated with Lake Powell (“Take our all-day boat tour to Rainbow Bridge”). Spotting to side text block. Facsimile reprint of the 1927 Century Co. edition, but includes color photographs of the area. Copy 2 (SR): Fair. Binding tight. No marks, tears. Without dust jacket, as issued. Pictorial front end paper has two folds, one extending from top edge to bottom edge. Bump to recto edge front board. Some spots on side text block. Upper rear corner bumped.
Notes: Byron Cummings (University of Utah) and John Wetherill were the first white guys who recorded their trip to Rainbow Bridge in 1909. Kluckhohn made the trip by horseback in 1925. Rainbow Bridge became a National Monument in 1910. When Glen Canyon Dam was planned and built one of the principal concerns was how to protect Rainbow Bridge (Federal law precluded damaging National Monuments). In the end the Bureau of Reclamation said “Screw it. How close can the water get and how much damage can it do?” And now, in 2023, the lake is a mile away (and that distance is increasing).
