Mission Santa Catalina, on St. Catherine’s Island, Georgia, was the furthest north outpost of Spanish colonization in EASTERN North America. It was overrun by the British in 1680, and the Spanish and the Guale Indians retreated south. The fall of Santa Catalina marked the beginning of the end of Spanish control on the eastern seaboard.
