Notes:  Reprint edition.  Originally published by J.J. Augustin, 1937.  This was Newcomb’s first book.  She and her husband operated a trading post on the Navajo reservation, and were friends with Hosteen Klah.  Klah allowed Newcomb to “reproduce” 45  sandpaintings–“reproduce” can’t be emphasized too strongly.  Since the Navajo are not allowed to reproduce the sandpaintings, Newcomb MEMORIZED the procedures AND the images, and was able to reproduce the sandpaintings.  MEMORIZED.  Another of Newcomb’s books,  A Study of Navajo Symbolism (1956, Peabody Museum) (See  https://joethebookguy.com/shop/navajo/a-study-of-navajo-symbolism/ )  explains the meanings of the materials she saw being used in Navajo rituals.
