Description
Author: Brew, J.O. (John Otis) (1906-1988)
Publisher: American Antiquity (Offprint)
Pub Date: 1942
Binding: Paperback
Condition: Fair to Good. Stapled binding tight. No tears. Previous owner’s name and locational information on upper front cover corner. Marginalia. 2 creases, one near the upper edge and one near the bottom edge of the front cover (I think these creases came from a mailing envelope flaps). Some smudging to rear cover.
Notes: Pamphlet. Reprinted from American Antiquity, Volume 8, No. 2, October 1942. Brew, the review’s author, makes no bones about it–“The testimony here presented, on the basis of the most careful reading I have ever given a text book, is the opinion that this book does not fill our need. It is a great disappointment.” Apparently the first edition of McGregor’s “Southwestern Archaeology” (see https://joethebookguy.com/shop/archaeology/southwestern-archaeology-2/ ) was roundly criticized, not just by Brew but also by Charles Lange (see https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/american-antiquity/article/southwestern-archaeology-john-c-mcgregor-john-wiley-sons-new-york-chapman-hall-london-pp-413-1941-500/215A74573AD874D87B1F1F38E1EA285D ). Between the first and second editions opinions changed and the book became a standard text. But I’m betting McGregor was mightily angry after this review. Apparently no blood was spilled. From the library of John Otis Brew, his name written on front cover, and his marginalia (referencing the Lange review) is on the last page of the pamphlet. VERY RARE. NO other copies available for sale.
