Notes: Cultural Resources Report 2. Not a USDA Forest Service “published” report–“For internal Forest distribution.” More history of past surveys of two refugee pueblos, with accompanying maps and diagrams, than new archaeology. “At least two of the refugee pueblos known in New Mexico are located in the Santa Fe National Forest. The two discussed in this report are Astialakwa (LA 1825) on Guadalupe Mesa and Kotyiti, (Cieneguilla, LA 295) on Horn Mesa.” (From the Foreword). “Whenever the Spaniards returned to New Mexico between the Pueblo Revolt in 1680 and the Reconquest in 1692, nearly every occupied village was found abandoned upon their arrival. The inhabitants of the pueblo villages had fled to their mesa-top refuges in the nearby mountains….Most of these refugee pueblos were built during or shortly after the Pueblo Revolt in anticipation of the Spaniards’ return. These sites are generally located in the uplands near the mother villages. Refugee sites commonly served the needs of several pueblos, some people coming from as far as the eastern plains. The location of refugee sites is obviously a defensive one.” (Page 1) VERY RARE. No other copies available for sale.
