Notes: Arizona State Museum Archaeological Series No. 98. The Orme Dam, as proposed, would have flooded the major portion of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Indian Reservation (only white guys would think of something like this), forcing the relocation of the entire tribe, along with the requisite ecological and archaeological damage to the area the tribe called home. The Orme Alternatives Project, an archaeological survey, was implemented to examine two possible alternatives to the Orme Dam–the first was to raise the height of Roosevelt Dam by 30 feet, and increase its reservoir size by about twelve-and-a-half square miles. The second alternative was to raise Horseshoe Dam, on the Verde River, by 140 feet (yes, that’s the size of 12 story building) and increase its capacity by almost 8 square miles. Eventually Roosevelt Dam was raised 77 feet, and another dam, the New Waddell Dam was built on the Agua Fria river. The surveys of the alternative sites showed hundreds of previously unknown archaeological features. Archaeology and Environment meet Phoenix’s need for water. This is Volume 1 of a 2 volume set. This volume sold separately.
