Notes: Mesa Verde Research Series Paper No. 3. Included is an appendix “The Archeological Reconnaissance of Wildhorse Mesa”, by Alden. C. Hayes. This survey filled in the gap between the first archaeological survey of Mesa Verde (Chapin Mesa) by Lancaster from 1951-54, and the second survey (Wetherill Mesa) by Alden Hayes from 1958-1960. It started where the Wetherill Mesa ended (at the head of Long Mesa) and ended where the Chapin Mesa survey began (at the bottom of the east fork of Navajo Canyon).
