Condition: Volume One: Good. Binding tight. No marks, tears, bends or folds. Very light edge and corner wear. Appears unused. Volume Two: Fair. Binding tight. No marks, tears. Upper front cover corner has an approx. 2″ bend. That bend runs through about the first third of the text (dropped on that corner). Lower text block has a arched line on it–looks like the book was set down on a piece of string or something curved, maybe bumped?. Doesn’t really affect anything, it’s just there and visible. Lower rear cover corner has an approx. 1″ bend. Edge and corner wear.
Notes: First published in 1843, Stephens recounts two trips to Yucatan (1839, 1842). After the 1842 trip he wrote “Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan“, and he was accompanied by an artist and an ornithologist and explored 44 “unknown” Maya sites, including Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and Tulum. Stephens was the Rick Steves/Paul Theroux/Bruce Chatwin of his day–the most popular travel writer of the time. This edition includes 127 drawings from the original edition. Two volume set.
