Notes: Pamphlet. Southwest Museum Papers Number Two. Gladwin, among others, postulates that a flood may have been the cause of Casa Grande’s demise. “The question will at once be asked, is it known that floods have occurred at Casa Grande? The obliteration of house sites and compound walls…gives evidence of a leveling process which must have exercised great power in the past; the bases of all standing walls in the area also show the effect of erosion….When one stops to realize the magnitude of the disaster of a flood to a people entirely dependent upon a reserve of stored grain, no precaution seems too great to take, so that the idea which prompted the building of the Great House was perhaps one of adequate storage protection, rather than building a fortress….” (pages 26-27)
