Notes: This is really festschrift in honor of Carroll Riley (1923-2017), though it’s not labeled as such.  Riley’s definition of “Greater Mesoamerica” extends from the border of Panama north into the Four Corners, southwest Texas (but not central or southeast), into the Trans-Mississippi south as far east as the Atlantic Ocean, with the exception of the southern tip of Florida.  Let’s call it the Greater Mesoamerican Co-Prosperity Interaction Sphere.  According to Riley and several of his collaborators that area shared a number of traits–a corn/beans/squash farming base, permanent masonry villages with plazas, religious structures and ball courts, and ceremonialism involving astronomy and calendrics.  The addition of the Trans-Mississipian southeast is based primarily on climatic data–i.e., mean temperature during the coldest months of the year–and the effect that had on migration.
