Notes: 1952. Seven months in the field, 53 sites surveyed, 11 excavated. The most important site, known as Lapita (Site 13), contained pottery and charcoal samples that dated to the early colonization of Oceania. The pottery they found dated to at least 3,000 years ago. The charcoal samples dated to the ninth and fifth centuries BC. Descendants of these colonizers of New Caledonia went on, over the next two thousand years, to populate the rest of the Pacific. The gift inscription “To Bill and Nettie, from Dick” may make this an association copy between Shutler and William Y. Adams. The volume is from Adams’ library (his stamp on upper front cover corner), and Shutler, Gifford, and Adams worked together in Arizona in the late 1940s, but without a sample of Shutler’s handwriting, pure speculation. Nice thought though.
