Notes: Journal.  SAA Memoirs Number 29.  Use of a hunter-gatherer group of inter-related tribes in India to create a model for all hunter-gatherer groups.  “Unlike other primates, groups of paleolithic man had economic territories.  This involved, at least, the techniques of primary territoriality.  The group or social unit having maximal autonomy in social interactions was the lineage-band.  This was the territorial unit.  Under no environmental conditions was the simple family (one household) the autonomous unit.  The modal size of the lineage-band was approximately 50 individuals.  There was a strong tendency for newly formed families to reside, most of their time, and to have their most common access to resources, in band territory of the husband.  Therefore, the system is characterized as patrilocal.  The associated descent unit was a patrilineal lineage.” (Page 105)
