Notes: American Antiquity, Volume XIV, Number 4, Part 2, April 1949.   The Davis Site is now part of The Caddo Mounds State Historic Site in southeastern Texas.  It was first recorded in 1919, but systematic investigations weren’t begun until 1939 and continued until 1941, when World War II intervened.  Newell died in 1946, and Krieger, a University of Texas archaeologist, completed the work.  Krieger recognized the site as a major Caddo community, occupied for centuries, and abandoned by the 1300’s.  For a more complete look at the site and its history see https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/caddo-mounds-state-historic-site
